Even if all the world is talking about Led headlights, the vast majority of cars still try to bring light into the darkness with halogen bulbs. Are H4 led bulbs better than H4 halogen bulbs? To find out, we tested a total of 5 H4 bulbs in the lab and tried to prove whether Led bulbs are so much brighter than the halogen bulbs. What that means for the car light and what light output the individual headlight bulbs, should clarify our test.
Bosch Longlife Daytime
Bosch promises more than 3,000 hours of service life – almost enough for a whole car life. Of all the legal lamps in the test field, the Bosch Longlife offers by far the most extended service life.
However, the Bosch H4 bulb decreases a lot on the brightness. Although the light distribution is even, the light throwing distance is not far. The range of 86 meters is not a top value for the high-range H4 bulbs. Well, this bulb is exclusive for driving on the city road.
Osram Night Breaker Laser
The brightest bulb in the Osram portfolio once again delivers a convincing performance in the light channel: a beautiful, even beam of light, best illumination from close range to 95 meters in front of the car.
In terms of range, it is beaten by the Philips Racing Vision +150% in the EU legal lamps – by two meters. The top values are bought with a not too long life of about 400 hours. At 30 dollars per pair, the Osram Night Breaker is +130% in the upper price segment of H4 bulbs.
Philips Vision + 30%
For a slightly optimized standard lamp with 700 hours of service life, the Vision is +30%. In the headlight of the Mini, it works great. It convinces in all measuring ranges with astonishingly bright and relatively warm light. Its range is the third-best among the legal lamps at 95 meters.
The combination of one of the best ranges with one of the best brightnesses and also one of the best light distributions couples Philips at the Vision + 30% even a much longer life than the other top models, what the lamp at a price of 17 euros per pair makes a kind of insider tip in the top group.
Atom H4 Led Bulb
The new top lamp from Philips does what it needs to do: It convinces in all areas. Friends of white very bright light come here with 3,620 Kelvin fully at their expense – and from close range to almost 100 meters.
The range of 97 meters is the second-best for legal lights after the Bosch Plus 120 Gigalight. Disadvantages are the comparatively high price of 30 dollars per pair and the short life of fewer than 350 hours.
Philips LED Bulb
The Philips LED Retrofit is the absolute high flyer in the test. But: LED lamps with H4 or H7 socket are not allowed in the EU. Too bad, because the performance of the high-quality Philips lamp is merely outstanding. Loose twice as bright in the distance range, with 115 meters by far the most extensive range, and with 6,500 K almost unreal white, you can not reach a real halogen lamp even close to the water.
The price of the lamp is with 180 euros per pair as exceptionally high as their performance – and the installation does not succeed in every car: control unit, heatsink, and additional cables should be installed by a professional. Since the LED lamp with an H4 socket also has the most extended life, it would be desirable for the EU to reconsider its legislation regarding the approval of such lights.
F2 H4 Led Bulb
With the Xenon Blue Design, the purchase price plays the first fiddle: four euros per pair of lamps fit every car purse. And for this price, the light output is not even wrong.
Although the light of the budget lamp is not whiter than that of the other bulbs and the different measured values are far from the top results of the established competition zoom (the range is rather weak with 88 meters for an H4 lamp), for Pfennigfuchser is the xenon Blue Design but maybe still okay, especially since halogen lamp with the name “Xenon” lasts much longer than the products in the group of five leaders.
The halogen technology is exhausted? Absolutely not. Philips released its LED headlight bulbs and show us how bright an H4 headlight can be – and at a much lower cost than the factory-installed LED light option. Despite the prohibition to use such retrofits, you still can get them on the Internet. Developing LED headlamps is anything but trivial, as the light source has to be so tiny that it is the size of a halogen bulb. That’s what Philips has achieved. Now you can find many alternatives led headlight bulbs from online stores, they are secondary development products based on Philips LED headlights. Some of them are expensive and some of them are cheap because of using cheap quality LEDs. You can find some reliable H4 led bulbs on this website at a wholesale price. They are brand manufacturers and offer 2 years warranty to all of their led headlights.
